Why You May Need To Use A Prong Collar For Your Dog
You might need a prong collar for your dog if they are going through training or if they have behavioral problems. Most people look at a prong collar and think how much they would hurt a dog but in fact they are more humane than a choker collar if used right.
The prong collar is used for training a dog or for walking a large dog that pulls. They are not meant to hurt your dog, only to teach them. The collar should always be removed when your dog is not being trained or walked, it can get caught on something and that can cause damage to your dogs’ neck or worse if they try to pull out of them.
Some trainers feel that after an undetermined amount of time your dog will no longer need the prong collar to be walked, and some feel that for large dogs that pull, it should always be used. You know your dog better than anyone and the choice should be yours. You may even choose the easy walk harness to keep your dog from pulling. Remember the pulling your dog does also hurts you.
You do need to know how to put the prong collar on properly, and where it should be located. If the collar is too tight it can be painful and if it is too loose it will not be effective. If the collar is in the wrong spot on your dog it can cause an injury. As for putting the collar on your dog, well different trainers have different ideas about this also. Some feel that you can properly place the collar over the dogs head and still be able to achieve the proper position while others feel that you must take the links apart and place it on the dog and then replace the links. I would suggest following the lead of your own dog trainer.
There are some trainers that feel that just because they are training a large breed dog that they must use a prong collar, others disagree. You can have the biggest scariest looking dog in the world but he may really be as gentle as a lamb. This kind of collar used on this type of dog would only instill fear into them. When you are looking for a trainer try to find one that will keep this in mind and not one who will try and force you to use a prong collar.
When it comes to a prong collar for your, dog check with different trainers on their opinions, it is a scary looking thing and not used properly it can cause damage to your dog.
